In December 2007, Club West honored
the youth of Santa Barbara by presenting NICHOLAS SCARVELIS of
Santa Barbara with the 2007 CLUB WEST TRACK & FIELD YOUTH
AWARD.
Nicholas, a 14 year-old pupil at Dos Pueblos High School won
the award from stiff competition, which included 14-year-old
high jumper HANNAH McDANIEL and Nicholas’ younger
sister, race walker 11 year-old STAMATIA SCARVELIS. The
three outstanding young local athletes all represented Club West
at the NATIONAL JUNIOR OLYMPICS at Mount San Antonio College
in Walnut, CA. last July.
Nicholas, who finished 4th in the Boys’ Youth Division
of the Shot Putt, tossed the heavy ball 14.54 (47’8”)
to finish with less than 12 inches separating the final four
throwers.
He was presented with his award at Harry’s
PLAZA CAFÉ by long-time Club West member and former USATF
commissioner for the Santa Barbara area LLOYD ALBRIGHT. Accompanying
Nicholas at the Awards luncheon was his sister as well as his
mother and father.
Other awards presented on the same day went to retiring officials
CLAUD HARDESTY, GUY PETERSON and LLOYD ALBRIGHT who all received
framed and signed Club West Honorary Membership certificates.
SBCC track and field coach and Club West Vice President ROBIN
PAULSEN presented Claud Hardesty with his plaque while current
USATF commissioner for the Santa Barbara area CHUCK WHEAT presented
Guy Peterson with his award. Club West co-founder and treasurer
DICK SANDOW made the presentation on behalf of Club West to Lloyd
